  • RDSO(Research, Development , Standards Organization)

Headquartered at Lucknow , it is Research and Development wing of Indian Railways headed by a Director General. It has well equipped laboratories. It designs, advises, directs on technological developments in IR.

  • RRT, Chennai

It consists of a Chairman and 2 members. Its chief function is to look into complaints lodged by commercial bodies and Trade Associations with regard to the freight charges and similar matters concerning Railways.

Certain disciplinary matters concerning Railway servants can be referred to RRT for its opinion. Group C and D employees who are dismissed or removed from service can approach RRT if they are not satisfied with the decision of Appellate Authority within 2 months. Views of RRT are recommendary only and not binding on GM.

  • Central Clearing House, Delhi

Allocate inter railway revenue and expenditure under different heads of various railways.

  • Indian Railways Conference Association(IRCA), New Delhi

Formed to co-ordinate between various railway in India. Function of IRCA is to form conference rules for interchange of stock between Railways and also to tackle problems between Railways pertaining to Coaching Tariff, Freight Structure, Interchange rules, Cross-traffic rules etc.

  • Railway Staff college, Vadodara

Imparts training to Indian Railway Officers both initial as well as refresher courses in Transportation, Commercial, Accounts , Mechanical and Civil Engg, Statistics and Establishment Rules

  • Commissioner of Railway Safety(CRS/CCRS)

Appointed and working under Ministry of Civil Aviation with the aim of freeing CRS from the influence of Railways in order to enable him to function independently in his function, ie, ensure safety to travelling public.

The main objective of CRS is to guide and advise Railway executives to ensure that all reasonable measures are taken for soundness of Railway construction and safety of train operations. However the responsibility of safety in the working and operations of Railways rests solely with the Railway Board and the Zonal Railway administration.

He has to see that all new installations – Signals and instruments, new lines, engines Rolling stock etc. are of specified standard and do not infringe on safety .

  • Central Organisation for modernization of Workshop (COFMOW)

COFMOW is a specialized agency to implement various workshop modernization programs of Indian Railways. Most of the Workshops are over 100 years old and COFMOW is responsible for modernization of these workshop with the assistance of World Bank.

Undertakings under Ministry of Railways

  • Rail India Technical and Economic Services Ltd. (RITES)

RITES provide consultancy services on all aspects of Railways from concept to completion. RITES provide consultancy services on new lines, track doubling and gauge conversions, bridges and railroad structures, signaling and telecommunications, rolling stock and workshop technology, railway electrification, material handling systems, railway operations, management and training, transport economic studies, inspection and such other allied fields of Railways both in India and abroad.

  • Indian Railway Construction Company Ltd. (IRCON)

IRCON is a specialized agency to undertake major Railway projects both in India and abroad. IRCON undertakes entire spectrum of construction activities concerning various aspects of Railways such as Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Signalling and Telecommunications etc.

  • Indian Railway Finance Corporation(IRFC)

IRFC was set up to raise funds through issue of bonds and augment Railway plan finance. The funds so raised are being used for acquiring Railway assets such as wagons, coaches, locos.

  • Container Corporation of India (CONCOR)

CONCOR has been set up as a Public Sector Undertaking for developing multimodal transport infrastructure for International and domestic trade and industry. CONCOR has a network of Inland Container Depots(ICD) which are fed by fed by Container Freight Stations(CFS).

  • Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd.(KRCL)

KRCL has been set up as a Public Sector Undertaking for constructing a B.G. line from Roha to Mangalore (760 km)providing a reliable and efficient transport infrastructure for the Konkan region. The project has been jointly financed by Ministry of Railways and the concerned State Governments.

  • Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS)

CRIS has been established as a non-profit making organization and is entrusted with the design, development and information of all major computer services on Railways on Railways. During the last few years CRIS have designed and successfully implemented Freight Operations Information System(FOIS), Passenger Reservation System(PRS), Unreserved Ticketing System etc.

  • Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC)

IRCTC was set up to take up the catering services and tourism activities from Indian Railways Its activities include catering services on IR, promotion of domestic and international tourism, and development of rail based tourism infrastructure, facilitating rail travel through internet, establishment of Food plazas and budget hotels at important railway stations.

  • RailTel Corporation of Indian Ltd. (RailTel)

RailTel was set up in 2001 with the aim of modernising IR’s communication system for safe and efficient train operation and generate revenue through commercial exploitation of the system.

  • Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL)

RVNL has been set up to execute projects with a view to strengthen the Golden quadrilateral and its diagonals and to augment port connectivity under National Rail Vikas Yojna launched by the Government of India. Its main objectives are to undertake project development, financial resource mobilisation and execution of projects on a commercial format using largely non-budgetary funds.

  • Indian Railway Welfare Organisation (IRWO)

This is an autonomous body set up under the patronage of Ministry of Railways for meeting specific need of housing both for serving and retired employees. It has been constructing houses in different cities across the country on self-financing basis for Railway employees.
