Job profile of Technician Signal (ESM)
Previously known as Electrical Signal maintainer (ESM) /Mechanical Signal maintainer(MSM).
Job profile:
- A Signal maintainer has to work indoor as well as outdoor where Railway signaling installations are provided.
- He has to maintain Block instruments and Panel provided in Station houses, Points and Crossings provided outdoor where Rails are joined, Gate signals. The work includes normal maintenance and attendance during failure.
- As the job demands extensive stay outdoors in remote locations it is not advisable to women.
- Signal maintainer works under the control of Junior Engineer(signal).

- Normally promotions upto Gr I comes quickly within couple of years, but after it can take longer depending on Division.
Qualification :
- Tech GrIII – (i)A Pass in 1st year BSc (Physics) OR (II) A Pass in 10 +2 in Science i.e, Maths or Physics or equivalent and as casual ESM for 02 years in S&T Department of Indian Railways.
- Tech GrII – Matriculation plus ITI / Act apprenticeship in Electrician, Electrical Fitter, Wiremen, Electronics, Information Technology, TV & Radio, Instrumentation, Computer, Computer Networking, Data Networking approved by NCVT/SCVT ( OR ) 10 +2 with Physics & Maths (OR) 3 year Diploma in Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, Micro processor, TV Engineering, Fibre Optical Communication, Tele Communication, Communication, Sound and TV Engineering, Industrial Control, Electronics, Instrumentation, Industrial Electronics, Applied Electronics, Digital Electronics, Power Electronics, Information Science/Technology Computer application, Computer Engineering, Computer Science & Computer Technology from a recognized institution approved by AICTE.
Selection Process :
- Written Examination followed by Aptitude Test and Document Verification.
- Separate exams are conducted by RRB for Technician Gr III and Gr. II
Training
- Technician Gr III : 12 months
- Technician Gr. II : 18 months
