Action taken on the observations/recommendations contained in Eighty-Third Report of the Public Accounts Committee (14th Lok Sabha) on ‘Cleanliness and Sanitation on Indian Railways’

 1.           Para 129 of the observations of Audit on Action Taken Notes on the Recommendations of the 83rd Report presented by Public Accounts Committee (2008-09) is reproduced below:

 

Para 129: Cleaning activities in a large number of stations continue to be vested departmentally and it is imperative that Safaiwalas are adequately and appropriately trained”.

 

2.         In view of the above, the Railways are requested to take immediate action on the above observation, and ensure that all Safaiwalas are adequately trained, including on the job training, and they also understand the need to keep the environment clean and healthy. Special emphasis should be laid on the collection and disposal of refuse, sewage and sullage in a scientific manner. In terms of Para 902 of Indian Railway Medical Manual Vol.II(Third edition – 2000), October 2nd has been declared ‘National Cleanliness Day” on the Railways and should be observed in true spirit each year.
